What Are the Dangers of Codeine Abuse?

Codeine is an opioid, so abusing it can lead to dependence, withdrawal, impaired judgment, and overdose. One of the most serious risks is slowed or stopped breathing, especially when codeine is mixed with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives. Long-term misuse can also increase tolerance and cause lasting physical and mental health problems.

Codeine Addiction & Co-occurring Disorders

  • Alcohol Use Disorder. Codeine and alcohol are often used together, which is risky because both slow the body down. Someone struggling with one often struggles with the other, raising the danger of overdose.
  • Anxiety Disorders. Some people use codeine to calm anxiety, since opioids can bring a brief sense of ease. But it backfires, as the drug wears off, the anxiety usually comes back stronger.
  • Bipolar Disorder. The highs and lows of bipolar disorder can push people toward substances. Codeine use makes those mood swings harder to manage and harder for doctors to treat.
  • Depression. Depression and codeine often feed each other. People may use it to numb low moods, but over time, it tends to make depression worse.
  • Polysubstance Use Disorder. Codeine is often mixed with other drugs, either to boost its effects or ease withdrawal. Combining substances is far more dangerous and makes codeine addiction treatment much harder.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. People with PTSD may use codeine to quiet painful memories or ease constant tension. Without treating the underlying trauma, lasting codeine rehab is hard to achieve.

FAQs About Codeine Treatment

Is codeine addiction dangerous?

Yes. Codeine misuse can cause serious health risks, including overdose. The risk is higher when codeine is mixed with alcohol, benzodiazepines, sleep medications, or other substances that slow the central nervous system.

Do I need detox before codeine rehab?

Some people need medical detox before starting outpatient treatment, especially if withdrawal symptoms are strong or if codeine has been used heavily or with other substances. Detox helps stabilize the body, while rehab focuses on therapy, coping skills, and long-term recovery.

What therapies are used for codeine addiction?

Codeine addiction treatment may include individual therapy, group counseling, CBT, DBT skills, trauma-informed care, family sessions, and relapse-prevention planning. These therapies help clients understand triggers, manage cravings, rebuild stability, and develop healthier coping skills.

Do you offer virtual programs?

Yes. Our online program includes secure telehealth services with therapy and groups.

How long does codeine addiction treatment take?

The length of treatment depends on your needs, symptoms, progress, and recovery goals. Some clients need more structure at first and then step down into a lower level of care or aftercare as they build stability.

Do you treat dual diagnosis?

Yes. We treat mental health conditions like anxiety and PTSD alongside benzodiazepine dependence.

Is detox the same as rehab?

No. Detox stabilizes your body. Rehab builds coping skills and prevention strategies to promote lifelong sobriety.

Will treatment affect my work or school?

Flexible scheduling in our outpatient programs lets you continue other life commitments.

How soon can I start?

Same-day and next-day assessments are available at our Springfield, MA, location.
