Extended Day Treatment (PHP)
Disclaimer: Referred to as a “PHP program” by some insurance companies
New Growth’s Extended Day Treatment delivers high-level outpatient care with medical oversight, psychiatric support, and daily guidance from a licensed substance abuse counselor.

Extended Day Treatment (PHP) Support
Some individuals need more than weekly therapy but not full inpatient care. Partial Hospitalization Program fills that gap with daily structure, clinical oversight, and evidence-based approaches.
This level includes medical supervision, medication management, and access to a licensed substance abuse counselor. It’s ideal for those stepping down from inpatient plans or at risk of relapse due to alcohol or drug use, including alcohol use disorder (ICD-10: F10.20).
“When people arrive here, they’re often overwhelmed or uncertain. We take recovery seriously. By the time they complete treatment, participants have developed the skills and structure needed to continue healing with confidence.”

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most intensive level of outpatient addiction treatment, right between traditional residential rehab and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Patients attend rehab programming five days a week for 4 to 8 hours a day, then return home each evening.
Daily care includes individual therapy, group sessions, evidence-based approaches such as CBT and DBT, relapse-prevention work, and, when clinically appropriate, medication management.
When PHP Treatment May Help
The PHP recovery program is best for patients who need daily clinical support but have a stable, sober home environment to return to each evening. It’s often recommended for people stepping down from inpatient or detox, individuals who have relapsed in a less intensive program, and those dealing with co-occurring mental health conditions.
PHP recovery program can also serve as a starting point for patients whose substance use has become unmanageable but who don’t need 24-hour supervision. The structure provides the consistency required for early recovery without removing patients from their families, jobs, or daily lives.
Therapeutic Approaches Used in PHP Treatment at New Growth Recovery
- Individual Therapy. One-on-one sessions with a licensed clinician provide patients with a private space to work through their personal history, identify triggers, and set goals. It’s where the most personal work happens, and where care plans are adjusted based on what’s coming up day to day.
- Family Therapy. Addiction affects everyone in the household, and recovery is stronger when families are part of the process. Family sessions focus on rebuilding healthy communication, setting boundaries, and helping loved ones understand both the addiction and the recovery process.
- Group Therapy. Led by a licensed clinician, group sessions bring patients together. The focus is on accountability, shared experience, and practicing the communication and coping skills introduced in individual therapy.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT helps patients identify the thought patterns that drive substance use, like all-or-nothing thinking or catastrophizing, and replace them with healthier responses. It’s a practical work that patients carry into daily life.
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. DBT treatment focuses on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness. It’s particularly effective for patients who struggle with intense emotions or impulsivity, providing tools for getting through high-risk moments without turning to substances.
Benefits of Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)
A partial hospitalization program provides the clinical intensity of inpatient rehab without removing patients from their lives. Evenings spent at home keep family ties, routines, and support systems intact, and let patients practice recovery skills in the environment where they’ll actually need them. It’s also significantly cheaper than residential care while producing comparable clinical outcomes.
PHP treatment isn’t the right fit for everyone. It works best when patients have a stable, sober home environment to return to each evening. Those in active withdrawal, with medical complications, or at high relapse risk usually need inpatient care first. The time commitment is also real because five full days a week make it difficult for most patients to maintain a full-time job during treatment.
PHP Therapy at New Growth Recovery in Springfield, MA
